Hola gente, hoy comparto una batalla ganada contra una impresora que me regalaron (Brother MFC-J4510DW) y que la maldita venía solo en idioma alemán. Aqui indico como cambiarle el firmware para poder usarla ten Inglés como Español.
Seguro que el método es funcional para otros modelos de Brother, pero os hará falta algún ajuste... yo aqui comparto lo que me ha funcionado con una MFC-J4510DW.
Requiere un poco de trabajo, aqui van los pasos:
1. Necesitas descargar el archivo Filedl32.exe (herramienta de Brother para enviar un firmware a la impresora) y los drivers de modo mantenimiento (Maintenance mode drivers, yo he instalado los de win7, cuando sale el mensaje de advertencia durante la instalación de estos decis que si sin problema). 2. Tienes que poner la impresora en modo mantenimiento. Para hacerlo, sigue los siguientes pasos:
Mantén presionado el boton de Home de la impresora (la casita) durante unos segundos
Llegarás a una pantalla donde se ve la versión de firmware. Mantñen presionada la ultima casilla (que está vacía) hasta que un nuevo menú aparezca
En los siguientes 3 segundos teclea *,2,8,6,4 (sin comas)
Si hiciste todo correctamente estaras en modo mantenimiento (Maintenance mode)

3. Ahora tenemos que cambiar el lenguaje. Para hacerlo, teclea 74 y luego "set mono". Llegarás al menu de seleccion de lenguaje, substituye el 0003 (Germany) por 0001 (USA) y presiona "set mono" de nuevo. Ahora la impresora estará en inglés y te pedira el nuevo firmware con "Please DL Rom"
4. Con la impresora en modo mantenimiento y el mensaje de "PLease DL Rom", conecta la impresora via USB a tu PC donde instalaste los "mainetance drivers", el PC la reconocerá como "Maintenance Brother Printer".
5. Aqui viene la parte dificil si tu impresora no es una MFC-J4510DW (si lo es pasa directamente al punto 6). Si tu impresora es un modelo diferente necesitarás el archivo de firmware, mi solución se basa en este post: http://pschla.blogspot.gr/2013/08/resurrecting-brother-hl-2250dn-after.html
Al final del post os explico como hacerlo para otros modelos de Brother.
6. Una vez tengas el firmware (el de la MFC-J4510DW está aqui (https://db.tt/5WvbcRyl)), simplemetne abre el archivo Filedg32.exe, localiza el icono de "Brother Maintenace USB printer" y arrastra el firmware hasta el icono de la impresora. Actualizará el firmware a la impresora y ésta se reiniciará. Despues del reinicio tu impresora ya estará en ingles :)

Solución para otros modelos de impresoras Brother (basado en http://pschla.blogspot.gr/2013/08/resurrecting-brother-hl-2250dn-after.html). No garantizo que funcione en todas, pero deberían seguir el mismo sistema.
Para descargar el archivo de firmware el único problema es encontrar los valores adecuados para enviar a Brother para recibir la direccion HTTP para descargar el nuevo firmware. Por snmp no conseguí hacerlo... así que al final, como también tengo un Mac como el autor del post, utilicé el proxy Charles y ejecuté el archivo JAR de update. No hubo éxito porque Brother utiliza SSL lo que em hacía imposible ver la información del HTTP POST, asi que cambié en el updater tool el archivo BrUpdSys.xml el file URL (FileGet XML node) a cualquier cosa sin SSL, por ejemplo http://www.google.com, lo que em eprmitió obtener la ifnormación de "post XML data".
Utilizando esos valores y haciendo el post con CURL al final obtuve el firmware. Mi petición de firmware tenía esta pinta:

Como véis hay ciertas diferencias respecto a la petición del otro post.
Al final, despues de hacer el post obtienes la URL al firmware en inglés que es esta: http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/LZ4228_M.djf
Ese firmware es solo para el modelo MFC-J4510DW, no lo utilices en otro modelo.
Note: Si quieres cambiar el idioma a uno diferente al inglés, deberás cambiar el 0003 a 000X en el modo mantenimiento y también en el <SPEC> XML de arriba.

Para ver el nombre del modelo exacto para meter al XML en el request.xml si el modelo de impresora es diferente, una vez está la impresora en modo mantenimiento, se ve con un "snmpwalk -c public IPIMPRESORA"... rellenas el request.xml de nuevo, lanzas el curl, y te da la URL del firmware, está todo en el post en inglés: http://pschla.blogspot.com/2013/08/resurrecting-brother-hl-2250dn-after.html

What are you trying to do and what steps of the procedure/s above have you done so far? Your printer seems pretty modern, some contents still on the net (https://www.nixmat.com/brother-mfc-j5330dw-driver/).
If you are stuck with the curl step, have you managed to get the values to build the XML file prior to making the curl request? If not, please do it this way:
snmpwalk -c public <IP of the printer> iso.3.6.1.4.1.2435.2.4.3.99.3.1.6.1.2
With that values, build the XML or post here and we'll help ;)

I am looking for something like D0061G_B.upd or D0061G_C.upd and use windows xp to update the firmware using filedrg32.exe in maintenance mode printer. I will soon reply with XML values, thank you very much!
Edit news: So it looks like without an original oem brother ink cartridge I can't enter in settings to set an IP addres of the printer to retrieve information, but I figure out the link for firmware's:

Good to hear some good news!, but were you able to get any non-last firmware version? how? Playing with the <VERSION></VERSION> is the only way I can see. As far as I know with with the curl request we always received the latest version available :(
We are warriors against planned obsolescence, but maybe new cartridges are needed for once in a while :0=. In my MFC-J4510DW (https://foro.hackhispano.com/threads/44846-Cambiar-idioma-impresora-Brother-MFC-J4510DW) case using LZ4228_P.djf (http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/LZ4228_P.djf) firmware I can use non-official cartridges, so thanks for the tip, I won't upgrade it anymore :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: You can downgrade firmware .djf file (.upd not tested yet) from USB drive, create a folder BROTHER, inside that put firmware file .djf, enter maintenance mode (long press "home", touchscreen down 3 seconds, *2864 > 28 > select file > press "mono start" , in 30 seconds restart and downgrade done. (learned from pdf service manual)
Downgrade to older version is simple, the tricky part is to find the older firmware that let you use compatible cartridges, if you have access to a database of firmware from services please share it with the internet, I am sure there are a lot people who have access to a similar printer brother MFC but don't have access to original brother cartridges

Yeah, my printer is 7 years old; it was far more cheaper in a german website than in english/spanish... so I went all in and then I got the surprise of the german-locked language :D, and thats why I did this post after all the adventure...but some months later, it was good to learn some german words for some months anyway :D
I see that you have edit your last post, you mentioned that you had issues to load the firmware as you drag&drop and nothing happened, is that solved? Usually the printer should be detected as "Maintenance Brother Printer" as you installed the maintenance drivers in your win machine. Is this step solved? Or you just did the firmware change via USB? si very good to know that, I'll update the first post if it works fine for you because I didnt know that way. Is just putting a folder named "BROTHER" in the root of the USB drive with the DJF file and run the procedure you mention?
And are you able now to use OEM cartridges?
Yes I edit the post, for some reason in windows xp and windows 7(those drivers are for older windows, 2000, xp, 7 with disable driver signature) the software send the firmware but the printer did't apply it, even I figure out to put the printer in recovery mode(service mode manual, pres power button after plug the wall, one time short, one long, one short, two short, three short) so I just use the USB drive method: maintenance mode > 27 > select .djf file in BROTHER folder(inserted USB thumb drive in the printer, FAT32 formatted) > mono start.
After all the effort the solution of my problem was: I did't have the starter pack ink to initialize the setup after resetting the settings, so I found a bypass for anyone who doesn't have the original ink cartridges, the solution is: [maintenance mode > 63 > mono start > 3 > 99] this will skip the setup stage(where ask for starter pack ink cartridges) and let you use the printer as normal with compatible ink cartridges. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-sypjI03a0

I have stupidly updated my firmware on my printer, and the ink cartridges I use are no longer working, I have used the above links to download and downgrade the firmware to the 'S' version of the firmware but still does not work so the printer must have been on a earlier version than that. it seems brother does not keep any versions prior to the 'S' version on there server, I know this is a long shot as its been a long while since you posted but do you still have a copy of the 'P' version?

Ahi está metida la url (http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/LZ4228_P.djf) de akamai con el firmware (el archivo .blf)... y ya o haces un wget o lo metes en el navegador y se descarga https://foro.hackhispano.com/threads/images/smilies/smile.gif
Para ver el nombre del modelo exacto para meter al XML en el request.xml si el modelo de impresora es diferente, una vez está la impresora en modo mantenimiento, se ve con un "snmpwalk -c public IPIMPRESORA"... rellenas el request.xml de nuevo, lanzas el curl, y te da la URL del firmware, está todo en el post en inglés: http://pschla.blogspot.com/2013/08/resurrecting-brother-hl-2250dn-after.html
Hola, intentando cambiar el idioma de mi Brother MFC-J6720DW tuve que instalar el firmware del modelo MFC-J6520DW sin darme cuenta y ahora el ordenador me detecta que es este último modelo. He seguido los pasos pero soy incapaz de descargar el archivo ".jpl" ya que en el código xml desconozco la versión del firmware para ese modelo.

Ya que los datos que necesitas para el request.xml los has de sacar de hacer un snmpwalk a la impresora... y si se lo haces ahora a la tuya imagino que obtienes los datos de la MFC-J6520DW :(. Prueba de todas formas a ver que responde, pero lo ideal sería pedirle a alguien que tenga una MFC-J6720DW que le haga un snmpwalk y te pase el output, se que no es fácil... pero va a ser mas fácil que contactar con Brother, auque ese sería el último recurso.

Quería consultarte si de alguna manera puedes subir el driver de mantenimiento ya que ningún link en el primer post funciona y en adjuntos solo está el filedg.

Hola, que yo recuerde con el filedg32 era suficiente y traia los drivers, hace mucho que no hago este proceso. no es asi? Al menos parece que con el filedg32 y luego el firmware es suficiente. No tengo un windows a mano para probar lo siento.
Gracias por responder! No, el filedg32 es necesario (De hecho solo lo conseguí aquí, gracias!) pero no reconoce la impresora a menos que también se instale el maintenance driver. Aunque no tengas windows, si tienes por algún lado el archivo te lo agradecería!
